Lanzarote
Yaiza market place
Yaiza
Now that the main road goes around the village, the place is much more tranquil. Yaiza is perhaps the most beautiful village on the island with its traditional white painted houses, and central square.

On each side of the road into the village, geraniums, palms, bougainvillea and agaves have been planted. lt is worth visiting the church of La Seiiora de Los Remedios, to see the lovely carved, wooden roof, and the high altar.

Opposite the church is the cultural centre, Benito Pérez Armas. The author and political figure, Armas, lived there between 1871 and 1937. The house is in the Canarian-Andalucian style of the last century.

Right next to Yaiza is the village of Uga, which lies at the end of the road leading from the La Geria wine-growing area (see illustration below). The traveller, arriving from the lava fields, is greeted by the sight of huge single palm trees and numerous white painted houses.
