The Memorial to the Peasants
by César Manrique in the
municipality of San Bartolomé.


The Monumento al Campesino erected by the intemationally famous artist, César Manrique is a memorial in honour of the hardworking peasant farmers of Lanzarote.

lt is a rough sculpture in white building blocks made into a fantasy figure of a Lanzarote farmer and camel. The blocks are actually, empty containers, formerly used to store water in. The great white sculpture stands out against the blue sky.

Right next to it, stands an old manor house in the typical style of the time with a lovely interior courtyard. lt is now a countryside museum. There are little shops as well, as a shoe maker, a gift shop and others. A small "ztapas-bar" you will find in the court yard. An excellent restaurant is also to be found in the complex of buildings. A huge hall with a domed roof and underground passages in lava stone is available for festivities, conferenees and concerts.
